US rims, §21 individual approval & TÜV reality

Rims are far more than just a visual upgrade for US vehicles.
Especially with Dodge RAM, Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra, they significantly alter driving behavior, track width, offset and load capacity.

And this is precisely where the challenge begins in Germany.

While many setups are used without problems in the USA, clear technical and legal regulations apply here. Anyone wanting to legally use US rims must deal with §21 individual approvals, load-bearing capacity certificates, and rolling circumference – not just aesthetics.

Registering RAM 1500 rims

Why US rims are rarely registered "just like that".

Many rims from the USA feature:

  • No German parts certificate

  • no ABE

  • no KBA number

  • only SAE or DOT markings

  • No tested load capacity according to EU standards

In practice, this means:

And this is not a mere formality, but an individual technical inspection.


Workshop practice: The most common problems with US rims

1. Load-bearing capacity – the central issue

US pickup trucks are heavy.

A RAM 1500 or F-150 weighs in at over 2.5 tons, depending on the configuration. The crucial factor is the permissible axle load. The rim must demonstrate the required load-bearing capacity per wheel – including a safety margin.

Examiners typically require:

  • Manufacturer's confirmation regarding maximum load capacity

  • ideally, proof of material or strength.

  • Marking directly on the rim

Without this proof, it becomes difficult – even if the rim were technically adequately dimensioned.

2. Wheel offset (ET) & track width

Typical US style often means:

  • Negative Offset

  • "Deep Dish" look

  • wide standing area

The problem:

  • The tires protrude beyond the fenders.

  • Steering geometry changes

  • Wheel coverage is no longer provided

  • Rework (e.g. widening) will be required.

"Visually suitable" is not enough here.
It requires measurement, calculation and ideally a preliminary consultation with the testing engineer.

3. Tire combination & rolling circumference

A rim is almost never registered on its own. The combination of components is always crucial:

  • Rim diameter

  • Rim width

  • Tire cross-section

  • Rolling circumference

The rolling circumference must be within the permissible tolerance. Otherwise, the following risks may occur:

  • Speedometer deviations

  • ABS or ESP malfunctions

  • additional testing and retrofitting measures

Especially with 20", 22" or 24" setups, it becomes technically demanding.

Practical example: 22-inch rims on a RAM 1500

Typical setup:

  • 22x10 inch rim

  • ET -18

  • 305/45R22 tires

Technical assessment revealed:

  • sufficient load capacity

  • Wheel cover slightly exceeded

  • Steering angle inside checked

  • Clearance tested at full lock

Solution:

  • subtle fender widening

  • complete documentation

  • successful §21 individual approval

Without preparation and coordination, this setup would not have been registered.


What an inspector actually evaluates when it comes to rims

  1. Load-bearing capacity in relation to axle load

  2. Clearance – even under entanglement

  3. Steering stop

  4. Wheel cover

  5. Rolling circumference

  6. Impact on chassis and braking system

Point 2 in particular is often underestimated:
Clearance can be checked with an articulation test. This shows whether the tires maintain contact during suspension compression or full steering lock.


Common mistakes in practice

  • Importing rims without proof of load capacity

  • Choose tire size "by feel"

  • Do not coordinate the combination with the examiner beforehand.

  • US and EU versions are confused

  • Do not consider model change (facelift)

Especially in newer model years, axle loads, brake systems or chassis components change.


Why VIN verification is crucial

Not all RAM is created equal.
Not all F-150s are the same.

Differences arise from:

  • Axle loads

  • Brake systems

  • Off-road or tow packages

  • air suspension

  • Hybrid or special models

The VIN provides information about the exact vehicle configuration – and therefore about the permissible wheel/tire combinations.

Without this check, a seemingly suitable setup can quickly become a registration problem.
